Area History and Amenities
Lake County is located at the head of the Arkansas River Valley in south central Colorado. Set against the Continental Divide, the mountains of the Sawatch and Mosquito Ranges come together to form the headwaters of the Arkansas River, the third longest river in the United States, and currently the nation's most popular whitewater river, as well as one of the state's best fisheries.

The county seat is the city of Leadville, located an easy ten minute drive form Fox Crossing Ranch. Once upon a time in the 1870s and 1880s, Leadville was the richest mining town in the United States. More silver flowed from Leadville's mines than anywhere else in the world, and legendary figures such as Doc Holliday and Jesse James frequented the valley.

Today Leadville is a bustling community of around 3000 people. Located approximately two hours from Denver and Colorado Springs, 45 minutes from Vail, and an hour from Aspen  [in the summer time], Leadville is at the very heart of the Colorado mountain scene. As expected with a community of this size, Leadville is home to state off the art medical facilities in the form of St Vincents General Hospital. The area supports a K12 school district, and is home to Colorado Mountain College and several private schools from kindergarten through high school.

At an elevation of 10,000 feet, Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the United States. Temperatures in the summer months  average a high of 70 degrees, while in the winter months the average high is 32 degrees. Like most of Colorado, Lake County enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year.
